THE'Vaïgatch Island is an island of North West of the Russia located in Nenetsia. Bordered by the Arctic Ocean and classified as a nature reserve in 2007, it is a sanctuary for arctic flora and fauna.

Vaïgatch Island is a coastal island of Russia located in the Arctic Ocean between the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea. It is about 100 km and wide of more than 45 km. With an area of 3,383 km² it culminates in 170 m altitude. Several rivers run through the island, there are also marshes and lakes. Politically the island is attached to Autonomous District of Iamalo-Nenetsia in L'Arkhangelsk oblast. Historically, Vaïgatch was, until the 19th centurye century, the island was an important sanctuary for the Nenety people with many wooden idols painted with the blood of sacred animals, mainly reindeer.
The climate is marked by a strong arctic influence, the average temperatures are −20 C ° in February and 5 C ° in June, therefore, no trees grow and the landscape is dominated by tundra. The island is home to a wide variety of arctic flowering plants. Birds are also very numerous (ducks, wading birds) in the marshes and lakes, one can also see arctic foxes or lemmings. The entire island is classified as a nature reserve following an agreement between the Russian government and WWF in 2007.
