Pronunciation guide

Vowels

Czech distinguishes between short and long vowels. The long vowels are marked with a dash (´) above the vowel (not about accent as in some other languages) with the exception of ů.

The distinction of short and long vowels can influence the meaning of some words, e.g. villa and víla ("villa" and "fairy") or no and step ("passport" or "waist" and "tape" or "strip").

In general the long vowels should last about twice as long as the short vowels, but in fluent speakers the pronounced length of the two types of vowels can be influenced by emotions, speech speed, k.s.

Notes

  1. 1,01,11,2Verbs in Czech in the first person in this case end in "-uji", but the form with "-uju" can be officially used in everyday situations (and many dense speakers do so in addition to really formal situations). The form with "-uju" is for many non-native speakers easier to pronounce than the form with "-uji" and if you are not a native speaker, everyone will understand why you speak that way.
  2. 1 night => noc, 2 - 4 nights => noci, 5 nights => nocí
