İskenderun is a city in the Mediterranean region (Turkey).
background
It was founded by Alexander the Great in 333 BC. Near (37 km away) the place where he defeated the Persian troops. Under the name Alexandreia kat'Isson, the Cilician and Syrian portals were supposed to be controlled from here.
Today, thanks to Turkey's second largest port facility, the city lives from trade, agriculture and energy generation through a coal-fired power station. The coal required is bought on the world market and burned here.
Some beautiful buildings in the city center and the historical places in the area are particularly worth seeing.
