Atbara (also Atbarah, Arabic:عطبرة, ʿAtbara) is an industrial city and transport hub on the Nile. It has several large cement works, railway workshops and other industrial plants that cause heavy traffic. Due to its location and the good range of accommodation options as well as its procurement and service offers, it is suitable as a stopover for travel in northern Sudan.

getting there
No travel permit is required to travel to Atbara in 2017!
By plane
Atbara has a regional airport. Because of its proximity to the capital, it is not worth traveling by plane.
By train
Atbara is located with a train station on the Khartoum railway line - Wādī Ḥalfā (Transition to Egypt).
By bus
Atbara can be reached by bus from Khartoum, Port Sudan and Merowe
In the street
Atbara can be reached by car on good to very good two-lane, new highways. The route Khartoum - Atbara is busy (heavy traffic), the route to the west is less traveled. No gas station in the Nubian desert (approx. 250 km).
By boat
By bicycle
For crossing Sudan by bike, Atbara is a possible (more complex) alternative route to the direct connection to Khartoum. With the desert crossings Dongola - Karima and Merowe - Atbara, you can take along the sights at Jebel Barkal and in Meroë (not to be confused with Merowe). The multi-day desert crossings on first-class highways must be well planned.
mobility
On foot or by motor rickshaw.
Tourist Attractions
activities
shop
Atbara offers a wide range of goods in well-stocked stores, with which overlanders in particular can replenish their stocks. There are also various types of repair shops and automotive supplies with numerous stores.
On the other hand, you won't find any tourist-oriented shops.
Currency exchange is possible in many bank branches, but you often have to insist on something. The prices offered are only slightly below those of the gray market.
