The two shepherds built a church in honor of the saint and the homonymous village was built around the church. In Agios Georgios, there is a second church dedicated to Agios Athanasios, which was built by the builder Dimos Zipaniotis or Zapaniotis in 1795 and is one of the most beautiful examples of folk architecture of the 18th century.

History

During the Greek Revolution of 1821, its inhabitants St. George They revolted, but in 1822, Dramalis suppressed the revolution and burned the village. For this reason, the oldest houses of the village - what are preserved - are of the late 19th century. The identifying nickname "Nileia" entered the name of the village with the liberation of Thessaly, when the Municipality of Nileia was established. (The Municipality of Nilia, which was dissolved in 1914, consisted of the villages of Ano and Kato Lechonia, Agios Vlasios (Karabassi), Agios Georgios, Drakeia, Agios Lavrentios and Agria. Nilia was an ancient city that was probably located near today's Volos.) village experienced particular prosperity from the end of the 19th century. until World War II. At that time, Agios Georgios Nileias, a fertile area with many waters, was rich in the production and trade of oils and apples. A lot of money was also coming in from Aigiorgites who had emigrated to Egypt and elsewhere. During the Occupation and then during the Civil War, the village experienced difficult days. Many of its inhabitants were forced to flee due to German invasions and the presence of local paramilitary groups. With the end of the Civil War, Agios Georgios Nileias began to decline. Many of its inhabitants stopped moving to stay permanently in the lower settlements of the same community. Today, Agios Georgios has a small population, but many houses have been restored by wealthy foreigners who use them as holiday homes.
