What to see
- Velika Castle. Velikas Castle is, in ruins today, a Byzantine castle in the prefecture of Larissa near the village of Velika in Larissa. Around the castle was a medieval settlement, today it is excavated by the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. The castle controlled the coastal road that passed through it in the Middle Ages and the plain that extends to its south. It is located at the top of a hill in the northern part of Velika beach near Theologos Monastery. The fortification occupies an area of 21 acres, its excavated walls are preserved from 2 to 3 meters high and 2 meters thick. Remains of the settlement are located on the hillside outside the walls and date back to the 6th century. Ruins of oil presses, warehouses and a three-aisled basilica have been found. It is believed that the settlement was created by the inhabitants of ancient Melivoia after its destruction by the Romans.
