What to see

Natural environment

The Municipality of Amyntaio is located in the southwestern part of the Prefecture of Florina and has a total area of 240,141 acres.

Lake Vegoritida

Lake Vegoritida or Ostrovo has a supra-local character, as administratively it belongs to the prefectures of Pella and Florina and to the Municipalities of Amyntaio, Filota and Vegotitida. It is surrounded by the mountains of Vernos, Voras and Vermio and is the lowest point of the complex of lakes Zazaris, Heimaditida and Petra, whose waters it receives through a system of canals and tunnels.

Together with the other lakes in the area, it was an important productive nucleus, around which settlements developed from early antiquity. This is documented by random, superficial findings, although so far no systematic archaeological research has been carried out. In addition to its narrow productive importance, it was and still is a place of special natural beauty that attracted a significant number of visitors, thus acquiring a new productive importance on a second level. Its steep banks are an ideal refuge for many wild birds, such as whiteflies, geraniums, as well as the globally endangered kestrel and has been designated as an Area of Community Interest in the European Ecological Network Natura 2000. The lake is an ideal fishing ground , the korgonos, the lathes, the platiks, the goulianos and the chironia.

Lake of the Stones

The lake of Petra, like Vegoritida, cannot be associated with just one settlement. This relatively shallow lake, maximum depth of 3.5 m, is located southwest of Lake Vegoritida, to which it is connected by a canal and tunnel and occupies an area of 14 km2. The wider ecosystem of the lakes with the neighboring mountains and the viticultural zone, composes the special landscape of the area, while it has been characterized as an Area of Community Interest in the European Ecological Network Natura 2000, due to the habitat of more than 130 species of birds and birds of prey. and the dwarf goose. The special importance for the bird fauna of the protection of one of the three unique breeding colonies of the lagona and the dwarf in the European Union, led the competent EU services to include the lake of Petra in the LIFE program Protection of the lagona and the dwarf .

The Amyntaio plateau is one of the most important viticultural zones in Greece and the cultivation of the vine has its roots in antiquity. The findings of the area and the traditional worship of Dionysus and St. Tryphon in the Christian years confirm the relationship between the vineyard and Amyntaio.

The vineyard of Amyntaio is the most continental zone of Greece, extends at an altitude of 650 meters and includes 7,500 acres. The area is dominated by the fine variety Xinomavro, also called Popolka. In 1972 the red wine and the sparkling wine of Amyntaio were included in the wines of the Designation of Origin of Superior Quality, while since 1995 the rosé wine was included in the same name. Necessary condition for the grapes to come from the demarcated zone of OPAP Amyntaio and to be of the Xinomavro variety. For red wines it is necessary to age them in oak barrels for at least one year. The only rosé Greek wine that belongs to the vqprd category, to which the Greek wines of the Designation of Origin of Superior Quality (OPAP) belong, is produced in the remote area of Amyntaio. In the vineyards of this area is cultivated the fine variety Xinomavro, the same variety that in the vineyards of Naoussa, Goumenissa and Rapsani gives wines of the same category but red. Some winemakers also make a white wine that comes from the red variety "Xinomavro". These wines are called Blanc de Noirs.

The 600 to 750 meters altitude, the many bodies of water, the hilly areas exposed to the winds, the sloping sandy and light soil, the climates that overwinter in the snow, the large temperature difference between day and night, compose the special characteristics to which the attributed successful result of local wine. The use of pesticides is avoided in the area, which makes the crop almost organic.

The winery was established in 1960 to meet the needs of the region's winegrowers. He is a member of ENOAM and participates in the program Wine Roads of Macedonia (apartment) | Macedonia, while since 2001 it has been open to the public and in its specially designed spaces, it can receive a significant number of visitors.

Travelers such as Jeleby and Pouqueville praise the vineyards of the region while in the 3rd Century AD the Athenian praises the Greek light wine. When Ali Pasha became the owner of the area, he procured viticulture products from its vineyards, while during the Balkan wars, Spyros Melas refers to Sorovic's excellent wine. Even in the great prosperity of the city there are merchants who transport the wine to the Monastery in Belgrade and Vienna.
