Andritsaina - Ανδρίτσαινα

THE Andritsaina is a town in Greece that belongs to the region Of Ilia. It is built amphitheatrically on a green slope, on the west side of Mount Lycaeus, near the border with the prefectures of Arcadia and Messinia. It is a town with a long history, which developed during the Frankish occupation (12th - 13th century AD) and, in fact, is mentioned in the Chronicle of Morea. Andritsaina played an important role both in the Orlofika and during the Greek Revolution. In fact, in 1826, the city was destroyed by Ibrahim's troops.

Today, the village impresses with its mansions, cobbled alleys and its square with tall trees and wonderful views. Trani Vrisi, located directly opposite it, is the oldest in the Peloponnese and was built in 1724.

  • Nikolopouleios Library. It was founded in 1840 following a donation from the humanist Agathofronos Nikolopoulou from Andritsain, who lived in Paris. Her collection includes rare manuscripts of the 16th and 17th centuries, rare books in either Greek or foreign languages, important documents from the period of the revolution and rich folklore material. Today, the library's collection numbers over 40,000 volumes of books.
