The Gyumri the Goumri (Armenian: Gyumri) is its capital and main city marz of Chirac, in northwestern Armenia. In 2008, it had 146,969 inhabitants, making it its second most populous city Of Armenia, after the capital, Yerevan.

Originally known as Coumair, this settlement, which was later renamed "Gyumri", began to develop only after the 19th century. In 1837, the city was renamed as Alexandropol, under the Russian Empire, while in 1924, during the Soviet period, it was named Leninakan (Armenian: Ленинака; Russian: Ленинакан) in honor of VI Lenin. After the independence of Armenia in 1991, it regained its name as Gyumri. On December 7, 1988, the city was destroyed by 60% due to an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale.
