Orient yourself

The last section of the boulevard Mannerheimintie, dedicated to the memory of the marshal Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim, crosses the city center. To the east are the train station and the Senate Square (Senators) which is dominated by the whitewashed cathedral. To the east is the picturesque Agora square (Kauppatori) with the waterfront from where the boats sail for the islands of the Gulf of Finland.

  •   Athens (National Gallery), Kaivokatu 2. - The collections include works by famous Finnish artists from the 17th century onwards.
  •   The Church of the Rocks (Temple church kirkko), Lutherinkatu 3. Impressive temple dug into a granite rock and covered with a bronze dome. It was built in 1969 by 2 brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. The Church of the Rocks is a concert hall famous for its perfect acoustics.
  •   City museum (Helsingin city museum), Aleksanterinkatu 16. - New museum dedicated to the history of Helsinki. It was inaugurated on May 13, 2016 Free entrance.
  •   KIASMA Museum of Contemporary ArtMannerheiminaukio 2. - Collections of contemporary Finnish art from 1960 until today. The museum building is the work of American architect Steven Holl.
  •   Presidential palace (Presidentinlinna), Mariankatu 2, Kauppatori.
  •   Lutheran Cathedral of Helsinki (Helsingin tuomiokirkko), Unioninkatu 29. - Neoclassical building built on a low hill that dominates the Senate Square. The construction was completed in 1852 and was dedicated to Tsar Nicholas I. It is the work of the architect Carl Ludwig Engel. In the center of the square dominates the statue of Alexander II of Russia.
  •   Old Church (Vanha Kirkko, Swedish: Gamla kyrkan), Lönnrotinkatu 6.
  •   Swomenlina Castle (Suomenlinna). On the islet of Suomenlinna is a huge 17th century fortress that has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Today the fort houses 6 museums, six museums.

  •   Helsinki Olympic Stadium (Helsingin Olympiastadion; Swedish: Helsingfors Olympiastadion), Paavo Nurmen tie 1. Built in 1938, the Helsinki Olympic Stadium hosted the 1952 Olympic Games and the 1983. World Athletics Championships. It will remain closed until 2019 for renovation projects totaling 210 million euros.
