THE Ikaria is a Greek island in the northern Aegean with a population of 8,423 inhabitants and is the homonymous Regional Unit of Ikaria.
At a glance
Ikaria is one of the largest islands in the eastern Aegean, with 255 square kilometers in area and 102 miles (160 kilometers) of coastline. Its topography is contrasting, as it shows green slopes and bare cliffs. The island is mountainous for the most part. It is crossed by the mountain range of Atheras (Pramnos), whose highest peak is 1,041 meters. Most of the villages are characterized as mountainous, which is due to the need to protect the inhabitants from pirate raids in the Middle Ages. Ikaria has a tradition in the production of a strong red wine, known by Homer as "Pramneios Wine". The island is largely covered with vegetation, arbutus, prinos and pine forest. There is also plenty of water. To the west there is the forest of Randi, one of the rarest characteristic Mediterranean prehistoric forests. Part of the southern part of the island has been destroyed by fire in 1993. There are rare and unique species of animals on the island, such as the "lizard", but also special flora. Apart from ordinary animals, the characteristic are the semi-wild free-range goats (the so-called "raska" = mountaineers, mountaineers), which are found everywhere, disturbing the flora of the island with overgrazing. The climate of Ikaria is in the climatic type of the coastal Mediterranean, ie dry and relatively hot summers and wet and mild winters.
