Generally
Geographically it is located in the northern part of the island, in the center of a green and fertile plain, 5 km from the sea. From the 15th century until the 19th it was referred to as Xirochori.
History
The ancient city of Istiaia, referred to by Homer as the "multi-grained Istiaia", was not located on the site of the modern one, but about two kilometers west, towards Orei and Taxiarchis, on its slopes. Mount Telethriou, along the river Kallanda (Xeria), in a place called Drymos, on a rocky hill. in the census of 1474 and much later through the poems of the traveling monk Daponte in the middle of the 17th century. Shortly before the Revolution, Northern Evia joined the scope of the territories controlled and ruled by Ali Pasha. The province of Istiaia remained under the jurisdiction of Ali Pasha until the day of his assassination (January 1822). The final integration of the city in the new Greek state took place in March 1833, together with the entire island of Evia. Since then Istiaia was the most important city of North Evia.
