Karystos has very good roads with wide streets and squares that were made according to a plan and ordered by Otto (King of Greece) by the Bavarian engineer Mirbach. For this very reason and in honor of Otto, this town was named in 1848 "ΟθωνόπολιςIt was renamed Karystos after the change of government in 1862. It is one of the first cities in Greece to have a spiritual center with a lecture hall, library and museum. Thanks to the combination of mountain and sea, Karystos has become a tourist center with lively traffic especially in summer. Very close to the city and at an altitude of 1400 m. On Mount Ochi a mountain refuge has been erected since the 1960s.
Next to the port there is an old Venetian fortress (Bourtzi) which was repaired, restored and beautified in 1960 by the Archaeological Society.
