What to see

The Aqueduct of Kavala is of the Ottoman period and it is probable that it was built on the site of an older aqueduct of the Roman period. It was built in 1520-1530 by the Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha

  •   Castle. is located at the top of the hill in the old town. Most of it was built in the 15th century. To get there will take 15-20 minutes walk from the port. It has a wonderful view to the sea and the city. It also has a cafeteria. €2.5.
  •   Archaeological Museum of Kavala. It has many interesting finds from the area around Kavala, as well as from other ancient settlements. It is worth seeing, although it has nothing special to offer.
  • Historical and Folklore Museum (Municipal Museum of Kavala).
  • Municipal Tobacco Museum.
  • Naval Museum of Kavala.
  •   Mehmet Ali Museum. It was built in 1720 and contains the museum. In addition to the house there is also a large garden that now functions as a bar-restaurant. Next to the house of Mohamed Ali there is a bronze equestrian statue of him.
  •   Khalil Bey Mosque and Maidens (The Halil Bey Complex). contains the mosque of Khalil Bey and dates back to the early 20th century, there is an older minaret on its side, probably of the 16th century and a seminary. The mosque is built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica.
  • Historical - Ethnological Museum of Nea Karvali Kavala.
  •   Aqueduct. well maintained, had been cleaned and repaired a few years ago. It is one of the landmarks of the city. It is probably of Roman origin, but the current structure dates from the 16th century during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It reaches up to 25 meters high, 280 m long and contains 60 arches. Also interesting to see are some of the old houses that were built on this monument. If you go 100 meters to the road from the side of the new city (Hellenic Republic Street) and turn right on the 2nd road (K. Pitiou Street) after 50 meters (in front of the school) you will find the beginning of the Aqueduct. You can climb on it and take nice photos of the Aqueduct and the Old Town.
  •   Church of Agios Nikolaos. The Ibarim Pasha Mosque dates from 1530 and in 1926-1927 it was converted into the Greek Orthodox Church of Agios Nikolaos. Around the church there is an old neighborhood with many large cafes, ouzo bars, restaurants and small shops. Especially in the summer evenings it is a very nice place to enjoy a beer.
  •   Lighthouse (A few meters away from the Church of the Virgin). from the small lighthouse has a wonderful view to the sea. From there, a trail leads down the cliffs to the sea, which is a romantic place to relax. The road divides and leads to the port or around the cape of fortification back to the parking lot under the statue of Muhammad Ali. This trail is highly recommended.
  •   Imaret (The Imaret). is a religious / educational complex which dates from 1817-1821. The Imaret (poorhouse) was built by Mohammed Ali Pasha, governor of Egypt. It is a classic example of Islamic architecture and has survived almost intact. It functioned as a Muslim seminary, which later became a refuge for the Greeks expelled from Asia Minor after the Greek-Turkish war (1919 - 1922). In 1967 the monument was sealed. In 2001 it was renovated and turned into a luxurious and elegant hotel, which retains something of the atmosphere of its time. Although it is worth seeing from the inside, it is unfortunately a bit difficult to get in if you are not a customer of the hotel.
  •   Central square (Liberty square). On the right side (as seen from the sea) is the old district of Agios Nikolaos with bars, restaurants, shops give the feeling that it was the city many years ago. To the left of the square is the modern shopping area. In front of the "National Bank" is the station of the vehicle that looks like a train to go from the old city. A good alternative if you can not bear to walk up the hill in the old town. Next to the shore is the Tourist Information Center which offers friendly assistance and free maps.
  •   Egnatia. The Egnatia Odos is the ancient Roman road along the Balkans from the port of Durres (Albania) and connects Istanbul with the Adriatic Sea and the Bosphorus. This first "avenue" along the Balkans was built around 146 BC. Kavala was an important station along its route. A few hundred meters from the ancient road are well preserved. Unfortunately the place is not marked and needs to be searched. Leaving the center of Kavala (on 7th Division Street), there is a parking lot and a view 750 meters after the Egnatia Hotel on the left side of the road. From there a downhill path leads after 150m to Egnatia.
  •   Commercial area. partly a pedestrian area with narrow streets, shops of all kinds and many cafes. Also in the evening you can find bars and restaurants there.
