History
Bitola has been inhabited since ancient times. There have been settlements in the area since the Bronze Age. The area in ancient times was part of Lygistida and was inhabited by the ancient Greek race of the Molossians.
During the 6th and 7th centuries, the area experienced demographic change as more and more Slavic tribes settled in the area. Many houses were built on the site of the now ruined theater during this period. The Slavs also built a fort around their settlement. The city then became part of the First Bulgarian Empire from the late 8th to the early 11th century. The spread of Christianity, the work of St. Clement of Ohrid and Naum of Preslava, took place in the period from the 9th to the 10th century, when many monasteries and churches were built in the city.
During the occupation, 1941-1944, the city was controlled by Bulgaria, which withdrew when it changed sides in World War II.
The majority of Bitola Jews were killed in World War II, while many immigrated to the United States and Chile.
