History

In the area where the present town extends, in the past two cities flourished, Pyrasos and the Christian Fthiotides Thebes.

Ancient finds prove the continuous human presence from the Neolithic years until today. Archaeological excavations have found the remains of large houses, remnants of masonry, ceramic utensils from the classical, geometric to the Neolithic era.

In 217 BC. Pyrasos was destroyed by the troops of the Macedonian King Philip V, together with the neighboring Fthiotida Thebes. Very quickly, a new city developed in the same area. Initially it was named after Fthiotida Thebes. In the years of Christianity the name becomes Thebes which, due to distinction from Thebes of Boeotia, changed to Thessalian or Christian Thebes. The new city quickly developed into an important Christian center. It was set on fire and destroyed in the middle of the 7th century, during the time of the Slavic movements in Greece.

Among the most important archeological findings of the area, are considered the many basilicas that the archeological dig showed and which are placed chronologically in the 5th and 6th century AD. A special feature of these constructions are the interesting mosaic floors which, thanks to the efforts of archaeologists, are still preserved in excellent condition. the size of Fthiotida Thebes but also its importance in antiquity.
