It soon developed into an important city in Halkidiki and in fact its distance from the Athenian Alliance was one of the reasons for the Peloponnesian War. In 357 BC. It was occupied by Philip II and destroyed, while its inhabitants were exterminated. After its reconstruction by Cassander, it flourished in Roman times, when Roman settlers settled. In the 1st century BC. The present canal was also built and seems to have been surrounded by a castle, which dates back to the time of Justinian. The ruins of the castle are preserved today, as well as several monuments. The revolted Greeks took refuge in this castle in 1821. Potidaea was destroyed in 540 by the Huns, in 1307 by the Catalans and finally in 1821 by the Turks.
