THE Nuuk is its capital and largest city Greenland.
At a glance
The city was founded in 1721 by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede and was named Godthåb. At that time Greenland was a Norwegian colony under the Crown. However, the place has a long history of settlement by Viking explorers from the 10th century onwards, from Inuit to later and to Inuit and Danes today. It is located at the mouth of the Godthåbsfjorden Strait off the west coast of Greenland, about 240 km south of the Arctic Circle and has a population of 14,501 (01/01/2005). It is located 60 ° 14 'North and 44 ° 7' West. The city is known as Godthåb to its Danish inhabitants, although after the activation of self-determination in 1979, the official name of the city is the Greenland name Nuuk. It is the seat of government for the Nuuk community, which covers about 100,000 square kilometers of Greenland.
