The prefecture of Xanthi belongs geographically to Thrace. To the north it borders Bulgaria, to the east are the prefectures of Drama (north) and Kavala (south), to the west the prefecture of Rodopi and to the south it is bathed by the Thracian Sea.

The capital of the prefecture is its city Xanthi. The climate of the prefecture is continental with cold winters and hot summers. The mountainous zone receives large amounts of snow, with temperatures often below -20c.
