At a glance

The existence of an important early Christian basilica of the 5th - 6th century, in the area of Hagia Sophia, shows that Panormo was an important town in the area. In 1206 it was occupied by the Genoese led by Enrico Pescatore. Due to its natural port, Pescatore fortified the town with a fortress (some of its remains are preserved). However, it failed to prevent its occupation by the Venetians in 1212. Due to its fortress (Castellion), the town was renamed Castelli. The Venetians kept the city as the seat of Castellano until 1647, when they were expelled by the Turks, who half-destroyed it.

Today it is a vacation spot with a large and several smaller hotel units. One of the old warehouses - locust processing units has been transformed into a state-of-the-art concert hall (locust mill), where important cultural events take place throughout the year.
