History
Relevant archaeological evidence suggests the existence - near Pefkochori - of an ancient settlement, which is identified with the ancient Aigai. The old name of the village was Kapsochora and was probably founded at the end of the 16th century. Throughout the Turkish occupation it was one of the 12 villages of the peninsula and was a vakuf of Gazanfer Aga. Ruins of a Roman settlement were found in the northwestern part of the port, where the ships anchor today.
