The port of Rotterdam is the largest port in the world - on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas. Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe, as it serves as a gateway for transatlantic - and not only - goods to the continent. The most important activities for the port of Rotterdam are the petrochemical industry and the commercial transhipment of general cargo. The port serves as an important transit point for the transport of raw materials and other goods between the European continent and other parts of the world. From Rotterdam the goods are transported by ships, barges, trains or by road. Beethoven, a high-speed freight train from Rotterdam to Germany, has been under construction since 2000. West of the city are large oil refineries. The Maas and Rhine rivers also provide excellent inland access. In the first half of the 20th century, the port's activities shifted from the center to the North Sea. The Niue Waterway canal was opened from Rotterdam to the North Sea, to allow water to flow into the -relatively shallow- Rhine and Meuse. Its construction was completed in 1872 and all forms of industrial activity developed on the banks of this canal. The port area of Rotterdam was expanded with the construction of the Europort complex (a gateway to Europe) at Maasflacte, in the North Sea near Hook van Holland. The planning of a second Maasflake was the subject of political debate during the 1990s, as it would be partly government-funded. Construction began in the summer of 2004.

The city's most famous shopping streets are Lijnbaan - which was the beginning of the pedestrian streets in Rotterdam in 1953 - the Hochstratt (Hoogstraat), η Koelsingel (will say coal canal) where Rotterdam City Hall is located, and the Βεενα (Weena) stretching from Rotterdam Centraal to Piazza della Hopline (Hofplein). In the extension of Hochstratt is a modern part of the commercial market of the city, the Beurstraverse, better known by its unofficial name Koopgoot (rendered as "market - ditch") as it is located at a lower altitude than Hochstratt, which continues on its slopes. THE Crucifixion is the street with most of the stores of branded companies, such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss etc. In Koelsingel is also the flagship of the department store chain De Bijenkorf. A little further east, next to the church of St. Lawrence, is the Markthall, an architecturally state-of-the-art shopping center (with small shops, mainly groceries and cafes) with residences in its upper parts, being one of the most famous modern architectures in the city.
