THE Tehran is its capital Iran (Persia). It is located in the center of the country, 112 km south of the Caspian Sea. The metropolitan complex in 2004 exceeded the population of 12 million inhabitants. It is located at an altitude of about 1,200 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Alborz Mountains. The name of the city comes from the ancient Persian teh, which means "warm" and the word ran, meaning "place". Tehran is today a modern and important industrial, intellectual and commercial center. Most educational institutions are concentrated in Tehran. The city still has a significant number of industries - which constitute 1/4 of the industrial complexes throughout the country - in the sectors of food, textiles, machinery, chemicals, wood, glass, etc. The most remarkable of the monuments are the Gulistan Palace, the parliament, the Marble Palace etc. It is characterized by a dry climate, as are several other parts of Iran. Annually, the average temperature is 17 degrees Celsius with extreme values that can reach 43 or -15 degrees in the summer or winter months respectively.
