History

Its ancient city Carthage is located just north of Tunis, in the coastal area. In 146 BC, the Roman Empire destroyed Tunis and Carthage. However, the city was rebuilt under the rule of Augustus and developed into an important city and center for the development of agricultural activities. From 1881 to 1956, Tunis was under her rule France. The French had established a protectorate regime with regard to the system of government, which recognized the fictitious power of the local government. During World War II, Tunis was occupied by Axis forces from November 1942 to May 1943 and was their last base in Africa.
