Chalkida - Χαλκίδα

THE Chalkida is the capital and main port of the prefecture of Evia in the region of Central Greece with a population of 59,125 inhabitants (2011).

At a glance

It is built on both sides of the strait of Evripos with one part of it located on the island Euboea and her other in Central Greece. On its mainland on the hill of Kanithos dominates the Venetian castle of Karabamba which together with the bridge of Evripos and the unique phenomenon of changing the direction of the water every six hours and in between one hour of stagnation (tide of Evripos), are its most important features. .

There is a suburban railway connection with Athens. From Larissa station to Athens, the journey is not more than 1-2 hours. Trains come and go almost every hour.

The city is 69 km away from the Greek capital, Athena. The journey takes about 45 minutes.
