What to see

  • Byzantine church of the Assumption of Christ (At the western end of Thetidi). It is "registered" in the earth, its roof is at the same level as the earth's surface. The temple, simple and unpretentious, was built with stone and clay many centuries ago, in 1100 AD, in a wooded, deserted and inaccessible area at that time, in a place where it was impossible to locate it by the human eye, because it was surrounded by dense and tall trees, mainly oaks, but also because, as mentioned above, it was built in the ground. The presence of a cell testifies that the temple was the main building of a monastery, in which ascetics and monks rested until 1720. Then new inhabitants arrived and settled, founding the village of Alhani (Turkish name), today's Thetidio. The Alchaniotes were engaged almost exclusively in agriculture and animal husbandry. The professions of coppersmith (blacksmith), horseman, barrel maker, seamstress and coffee-maker were extremely useful at that time. So the monks left for another, obviously deserted, area. Since then the Byzantine church was the church of the newly established settlement (1720). All Christian ceremonies were held there, for 244 whole years, until 1964, when the new church of the village was erected at a distance of about 400 meters from the old one.
