Historical legend

According to legend, Dayu led the Yellow River out of the Longmen to control the water. When he came to Tongguan, he was blocked by two mountains. The southern part of these two mountains is called Huashan, and the northern one is called Zhongtiaoshan. They are closely connected, and the river cannot pass through. At this time, a great god named Giant Spirit came to help and broke the two mountains apart, but Huashan was broken into two mountains, one high and one low. The high one was called Taihua Mountain and the low one was called Shaohua Mountain. This is also the origin of the "giant spirit roaring and splitting the two mountains, and the flood jet shooting the East China Sea" in Li Bai's poems. In addition, stories such as "Agarwood smashing the mountain to save the mother" and "Blowing the flute to attract the phoenix" are widely circulated. According to the textual research of the famous scholar Zhang Taiyan in the Qing Dynasty, Huashan is one of the birthplaces of Chinese national culture. Both "China" and "Huaxia" are named after Huashan. There are records about Mount Hua in "Shang Shu"; in "Historical Records" there are also the deeds of Huangdi, Yao, and Shun traveling around Huashan; Qin Shihuang, Han Wudi, Wu Zetian, Tang Xuanzong and other dozens of emperors have also visited Huashan for large-scale sacrifice activities. Huashan also left countless celebrities' footprints, legends and historical sites. Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, there have been more than a thousand poems, steles and travel notes written by literati and writers such as Li Bai and Du Fu on Huashan, and there are as many as thousands of stone carvings. Many scholars, including Yang Bao and Yang Zhen in the Han Dynasty, Feng Congwu and Gu Yanwu in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, lived in seclusion in the Huashan Mountains and opened a museum to teach apprentices. The Xiyue Temple, built during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, is known as the "Forbidden City in Shaanxi" and the "First Temple of the Five Sacred Mountains". It is the oldest and largest temple in the Five Sacred Mountains. In Chinese history, 56 emperors once visited this mountain for cruises or held sacrifices.
