Most countries in the world now use the metric system, also known as the metric system. The British Empire’s system of weights and measures still exists in various forms.AmericaU.KCanadawithLiberia, Are used more or less. For example, in the United States you can see that metric units are only used in the scientific and military fields, but in the United Kingdom and Canada they are mixed.

To understand the system of a country that uses different weights and measures from you, a rough comparison is useful. We will use "=" below, but some are only approximate values.

temperature

A poem in Celsius

Zero is freezing
10 is not
20 is warm
and 30 is hot

 100 ℃ = 212 ℉ = the boiling point of water 58 ℃ = 136 ℉ = the highest temperature record on earth 37 ℃ = 98.6℉ = human body temperature 20 ℃ = 68 ℉ = room temperature 0 ℃ = 32 ℉ = freezing point of water -18 ℃ = 0 ℉ = ice cream storage temperature -40 ℃ = -40 ℉ = minus forty degrees! -89 ℃ = -129 ℉ = the lowest temperature record on earth -273 ℃ = -459 ℉ = absolute zero

To convert the metric system (Celsius) to Fahrenheit, double the number and add 30. From Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 30 and divide by 2.

Fahrenheit = (℃×1.8) 32
Celsius temperature =℉−32/1.8

Length and distance

  • 1 inch (1") = 2.54 cm
  • 1 foot (1') = 30 cm
  • 1 mile = 1.6 km

Refer to

  • A credit card is approximately 0.75 (3/4 mm) mm thick.
  • The width of the nail is about 1 cm (centimeter).
  • The height of most adults is between 1.5 and 2 meters.
  • A 15-minute walk is about 1 km (kilometer).

weight

  • 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds
  • 1 ounce = 28.54 grams
  • 1 pound = 454 grams

Surface area

For small things, some people use square inches or square centimeters. They are about 6.5cm2I.e. 1in2

The size of an apartment may be 11 square feet or square meters.

For larger areas, it may be 2.5 acres or one hectare.

capacity

The metric unit of capacity is liters.

However, many things actually use ml (milliliters) or its equivalent cc (cubic centimeters). Roughly speaking, one teaspoon is 5 milliliters and one ounce of liquid is 30 milliliters.

In American and British units, 4 quarts = 1 gallon and 2 pints = 1 quart. Nevertheless, some American units are smaller than British units. A quart in the United States is equal to 32 fluid ounces and in the United Kingdom is 40; a liter is about 35. An American gallon is equal to 128 fluid ounces or 3.78 liters, and a British gallon is equal to 160 fluid ounces or 4.54 liters.

The engine unit of automobiles and motorcycles usually uses cubic centimeters (cc) or liters or cubic inches. 1000 cubic centimeters (cc) or one liter is equivalent to 61 cubic inches (cubic inches).

Refer to

  • One liter of water weighs 1 kilogram. Since most liquids (milk, orange juice) are sold by volume, it can be roughly considered that 1 liter is 1 kilogram.
  • One liter is equivalent to the volume of a cube of 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm.
  • 1 cubic meter (1 m3) = 1000 liters. 1 m3The weight of water is 1000 kg = 1 ton. Don't try to lift such a weight!
  • In Europe, a bottle of wine is usually 750 mL (0.75 L) (and occasionally 700 mL or 1 L).
