The city extends west and south, and has three ports: Regla, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The Almendares River runs through the city from south to north and flows into the Florida Strait. It is located on the northwest coast of Cuba, surrounded by the province of Havana, just over 90 nautical miles (144 km) south of Key West, Florida. The geographical position is 23 degrees 8 minutes north latitude and 82 degrees 23 minutes west longitude.

Now, Havana is the seat of the Cuban government, and many political institutions and business headquarters are also located there.
