The city has a total area of 1,477 square kilometers (excluding the water surface of the Yangtze River) and a population of 1.4226 million (2012). Rugao City was rated as one of the six longevity towns in the world by the International Society of Natural Medicine. As of the end of 2011, there were more than 270 centenarians out of 1,452,800 in Rugao, ranking first among counties (cities) in China in total. In November 2016, Rugao was selected as the second batch of national tourism demonstration areas by the National Tourism Administration. In November 2017, it was awarded the National Civilized City.
