Kawasaki has a population of 1.061 million (statistics in 1985) and an area of 136.5 square kilometers. It was established as a city in 1924. It was originally an agricultural settlement and transportation center. Rising in the early twentieth century, mainly light industries such as food, and famous for MSG and textile products. In 1913, land reclamation began, and large companies such as Japan Steel Pipe and Fuji Electric entered one after another. After the 1930s, reclaimed land along the Tama River and coastal areas, and established heavy industrial zones. It is now one of the largest heavy industrial cities in the country. Famous for industries such as steel, petroleum, petrochemical, shipbuilding, etc., it is connected with Tokyo and Yokohama blocks to form the Keihin Industrial Zone.
