It is said that Columbus landed on the island of San Salvador. The Spaniards were not interested in immigrating to the island, but came here to hunt for slaves, causing a sharp decline in the population.
In 1648, a group of British from Bermuda came to the Bahamas, but there was no plan to settle, so it soon became a refuge for pirates, and the Spaniards landed and infested from time to time. Not particularly prosperous. After the American Revolution of Independence, some people who were loyal to Britain fled the United States and came to the Bahamas, which led to the prosperity of the Bahamas and successively established cotton plantations. During the American Civil War, it became the center of blockade of smuggling ships. It was not until after World War II that tourism began to develop and promote permanent prosperity in the region.
The Bahamas gained internal autonomy in 1964. It became an independent Bahamas in 1973.
