1 Amesoy Castle

Introduction

Amesoy Castle(Ammersoyen Castle) is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Netherlands. It was built in the 14th century and is located in the province of Gelderland in the eastern part of the Netherlands.

Tourists can choose to play on their own or take a sightseeing tour.

During the tour, you can see the entire manor, the knight's hall and the rooms where the women used to live. Behind the ancient winding stairs and heavy walls is the museum tower. There are many places where children can play in the Amesoy Castle. Various activities are regularly organized in the tower. In the weapon room, you can even try on the costumes of the knights of the time.

There is also a gift shop and a small tea room in the castle. Visitors of any age can find activities suitable for them in the castle.

Outside of the castle

history

The castle was built by Dirk van Herlaer on the river Maas in 1350. The particularity of Amesoy Castle is that it was built for defense, which was different from other castles at the time. The design includes four parts built around the center. Each direction has its own heavy tower to provide extra protection. The castle includes a guardhouse, which was initially surrounded by a moat. At the time, it was one of the best defense structures in the Netherlands.

When Dirk died in 1354, the castle was passed on to his eldest son Gerhard. Over the next 400 years, the castle changed hands several times in the family.

In the course of history, the castle was besieged several times, the most famous two being in 1513 and 1574. The castle suffered the most serious damage in 1590. At the same time, its owner, Joris van Arkel, passed away due to injury. After Joris's death, the castle remained in a damaged state until the Van Arkel family raised enough funds to repair the castle in the 17th century. . During the Dutch-French War in 1672, France swept the Netherlands and burned many Dutch castles along the way. Thomas van Arkel paid France seven thousand guilders to protect the castle. The castle survived this, but Thomas was always in debt and could not continue the castle. After his death, the castle was inherited by another family.

Then, the castle was sold to the Roman Catholic Church in 1876 and used as a monastery. During the Second World War, the castle was used as a refuge for village residents. After the war, the castle was purchased by the Gelderland Castle Trust in the late 1950s and gradually restored to its previous medieval glory.

2 Fort kanabal

Introduction

Outside of the castle

Fort kanabal(Cannenburch Castle) is a Dutch water castle built in 1543 in the small town of Vaassen in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. It was built on the basis of an old castle by Marshal Maarten van Rossum. Until now, the architectural design of the castle is still very intact, and its design itself contains many Renaissance elements. The complex is completely surrounded by water.

structure

The plan of the castle is rectangular. There are almost square towers in all four directions. There is an "onion-like" dome in the northeast corner, and on the south-facing front, another taller onion dome was built. The entrance was previously accessible via a suspension bridge over the moat, but now it is replaced by a stone arch bridge. Behind the entrance on the first floor is a slender and narrow terrace, and behind the terrace is a large hall. Several representative rooms can be reached from this hall: a hunting room (also known as the "white room" due to the bright color of the walls) and a salon on the right, as well as a dining room and bedroom on the left. A steep spiral staircase connects the kitchen and bedroom on the ground floor, and some rooms are equipped with a skeleton-style Delft tiled fireplace.

The other room connected by the stairs to the lobby is a small library or study room, which is called because of its red wallpaperRode Kamer(Red room)

By 1560, Dorrenvale Castle had almost reached its present state. Around 1637, the outer walls of the castle were rebuilt and a dike was built around the castle to protect it from flooding of the Rhine River.

During the Second World War, the castle suffered tremendous damage, and the castle had to be repaired again, which lasted from 1940 to the early 1980s. Today, the castle serves as a museum under the responsibility of the Gelderland Foundation. The interior of the castle has been restored to its state in the 18th century.
