Meizhou is the final formation, settlement and reproduction place of the Hakka ethnic family in history, and it is also the ancestral home and spiritual home of Hakka overseas Chinese all over the world. At the 12th World Hakka Congress, Meizhou was honored as " World Hakka Capital".

Meizhou City is located at the junction of Guangdong, Fujian and Jiangxi provinces. The northeast is bordered by Longyan and Zhangzhou in Fujian Province, the northwest is connected with Ganzhou in Jiangxi Province, the south is adjacent to Chaozhou, Jieyang, and Shanwei in Guangdong Province, and the west It borders Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. The origin of the name Meizhou is controversial. It is said that the local Duomei is known as the "Ten Mile Plum Blossom"; it is said that this place is the title of the Han Dynasty General Meiju. However, none of these claims has an exact basis. According to the "Guangxu Jiayingzhou History", Meizhou was named because of the local "Meifeng" mountain and "Meixi" water.
