Introduction

Yokosuka has long held an important position in the history of the Japanese navy. Matthew Perry arrived in the area in the 1850s and began modernization. Today, it is one of the main naval ports for American and Japanese forces. During the Second World War, because the US military had chosen this place as a post-war base, it was spared the fate of being bombed like other Japanese cities.

Yokosuka City is located by the sea and has a population of approximately 420,000. Because the US naval base is located here, many Americans live here. The famous food in this city is navy curry. Yokosuka is also the hometown of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
