  • 1 Tver Tver on Wikipedia — The capital and the only major city in the region;MoscowA famous ancient city competing for the status of the capital of Russia; during the Soviet period, when Nazi Germany occupied the city for two months, many cultural assets were massively destroyed.
  • Kashin — A small city with several ancient churches and a cathedral
  • Kalyazin — A small town east of Kashin; the famous landmark is the Kalyazin Bell Tower in the middle of the river. It was built between 1796 and 1800 as part of the local monastery. The city was flooded and converted into a reservoir, and this tall tower was also facing the fate of being blown up. Fortunately, the designer of the reservoir proposed to keep the clock tower as a lighthouse. In the end, the entire city survived and became a major tourist attraction in Russia.
  • Ostashkov — Probably the most pleasant provincial town in Russia, located on the pure Seliger Lake, with neoclassical architecture, 15th and 16th century churches, and the closest town to the magnificent Nila-Starabinsk monastery
  • Lezhev — The second largest city in the region; unfortunately, the historic and interesting monument was almost destroyed during the Second World War

Language

The local minority is a Karelian (1%, 6.7% in 1897), who moved here under the Treaty of Stolbovo in 1617; there is also a Ukrainian minority (1.5%) .

Travel around

Within the city limits of Tver, there are several small shuttle buses and an outdated but reliable tram system that can travel around Tver at a very low price. However, tourists should avoid taking business taxis, because the prices are likely to be very expensive, especially if the driver will charge high prices for foreign tourists. There is also a bus service connecting Tver and Moscow; and a rail service, because Tver is the main stop for trains between Moscow and St. Petersburg.
