Sappor is the only national park in Liberia, covering an area of more than 1,800 square kilometers; it is one of the only major rain forests in West Africa and a sanctuary for pygmy hippos and elephants. Although years of civil war had affected the park, Sappor was slowly restored to its original appearance.
