history

Great Wall Map

What we knowGreat WallIn fact, it is a collection of a series of walls built by different emperors in different eras.

  • The first great wall: Built in 221-207 BC, Qin Dynasty
  • The second great wall: Built in 205-127 BC, Han Dynasty
  • The third great wall: Built in 1200 AD, Jin Dynasty
  • The Fourth Great Wall: Built in 1367-1644 AD, Ming Dynasty

Almost all the Great Walls of other periods are now in ruins. Most of the photos are of the Ming Great Wall.

The first great wall

The first great wallIt was Emperor Qin Shi Huang who completed the construction in 214 BC after he consolidated his rule and unified China for the first time. The Great Wall was used to defend against attacks by the Huns from the north. Qin Shihuang mobilized 500,000 workers to build the Great Wall in 32 years. Although the Great Wall was committed to defending against the enemy, it failed to prevent internal pressure, which led to a regime change in 206 BC, and the Han Dynasty became the new ruler. The first emperor of the Han DynastyHan GaozuSoon I saw the benefits of the Great Wall in defense of the enemy and built more Great Walls until it reachedGansuThe province’s surrender.

The second great wall

More than 70 years later, the Han Dynasty was still fighting the enemy, because the Great Wall was damaged and the enemy could easily break it. In 130 BC, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty began to plan to rebuild and expand on the foundation of the original First Great Wall. In 127 BC, the post-emperor completed the expansion of more areas under his rule. He ordered the expansion, inGansuProvinceZhangyeWuweiJiuquanDunhuangYinchuanAnd inXinjiangLop Nur and other places builtThe second great wall. The Great Wall extends all the way to the Hexi Corridor, passing through thisSilk roadCommunicate with Western countries.

When the Han Dynasty collapsed into the three kingdoms of Wei, Shu and Wu, Wei decided to continue to maintain the Great Wall to defend against the nomadsRouranwithXianbeiAttack from the northern plains. Despite frequent maintenance, Rouran, the nomadic people, is still constantly breaking through the Great Wall. Wei built different walls inside and outside the Great Wall. In the end, the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties merged into a unified Sui Dynasty, which was overthrown by the Tang Dynasty in 618 AD.

It was not until the reigns of the Liao and Song dynasties that the rulers did anything to the Great Wall. The Liao Dynasty controlled the north, and the Song Dynasty controlled the south. The Liao Dynasty mainly had a tribal problem in northeastern China called Jurchen (called Manchu in Mandarin), so the walls they built were built along the Heilongjiang River and Songhua River. But these failed to prevent the attackers from going south.

The third great wall

In 1115, the Jurchens established Jin in the north. They understand that the Mongols are behind them. The emperor of the Jin Dynasty ordered the construction in today’s Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia Autonomous RegionThe third great wall. The Third Great Wall has a distinctive feature-the construction of ditches accompanies the entire Great Wall.

Although the Jurchens built this impressive fortification, the Mongols destroyed the Jin Dynasty in 1276 and established the Yuan Dynasty. During the reign of the Yuan Dynasty, the Great Wall fell into a severe state of unrepair. In 1368, the Ming Dynasty drove straight ahead and took control of the Great Wall (controlling all of China).

After getting rid of the Mongols, the rulers of the Ming Dynasty made up their minds that they would no longer be replaced by outsiders (referring to nomads). Hongwu Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang-the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty-re-established the Great Wall defense line, established a large number of fortifications and garrisons along the Great Wall, and in 1372 established Jiayu Pass at the western end of the Great Wall. Yongle Emperor Zhu Di-the second emperor of the Ming Dynasty Home and diplomat.

The Fourth Great Wall

It was not until the Tumu Fortification and the Mongols' battle that the Ming Dynasty renewed its interest in consolidating the Great Wall. Between 1569 and 1583,The Fourth Great Wall——The most prestigious Great Wall was built. This section of the fortified Great Wall successfully repelled the Mongols' attacks on many occasions.

In 1644, the Manchus seized the world and established the Qing Dynasty. From then on, the Great Wall began to slowly disappear-the stones used to build the city were removed and used to build projects and homes. When local people and local governments were encouraged to help demolish the Great Wall, the Cultural Revolution undoubtedly severely damaged the Great Wall.

It was not until 1984 that Deng Xiaoping started the repair and protection project of the Great Wall. In 1987, the Great Wall was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

landscape

The geographic landscape of northern China varies widely, fromLiaoningHebeiThe mountains in the north, toNingxiaThe grasslands of China, and then to the semi-arid deserts of China’s Loess Plateau region, andInner MongoliaThe dune landscape junction of the Tengger Desert. The vast majority of tourists will beHebeiwithBeijingVisit the Great Wall, but most of the Great Wall lies in the desert of China.

Flora and fauna

Considering the different habitats along the Great Wall, China’s wildlife is diverse. From the rare Siberian tiger in Northeast China to living inGansuSouth,SichuanwithShaanxiThe giant panda, you never know what animal you will encounter someday in the future.

Many wild mammals can be found in northern China, such as yellow ferret (Northeast Asian species), black bear, brown bear, northern pika, and brown vole. The types of deer include sika deer, roe deer, and the popular flower deer (which has many uses in Chinese medicine).

Birds in the area include various types of pheasants, black grouse, grouse, various woodpeckers, mandarin ducks, and immortal thrush (a rare migratory bird). Cranes are especially respected in China. Grey cranes, demoiselle cranes, white-naped cranes, white-headed cranes and red-crowned cranes all breed in China.

Along the Great Wall, you can find a variety of nourishing plants, such as rare ginseng (Korea ginseng). Chinese medicine has taken thousands of years to discover and use these nourishing plants to benefit mankind.

climate

There are four distinct seasons in northern China, and the contrast is strong when the seasons alternate. Normally, the temperature in winter and summer can reach extreme values of minus 20 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius respectively.

go sightseeing

Since the Great Wall is quite long as a whole, there are many places to visit. The following list is divided by provinces/municipalities.

Beijing

Simatai Great Wall

BeijingThe most popular attractions can be visited in one day.

For tourism projects and information in Beijing, you can check various Chinese tourism websites, or visitBeijing Tourism Net(Beijing Tourism Development Commission website) query (except for Chinese, support eight languages: English, German, French, Japanese, Korean, Western, Russian, and Arabic).

Badaling and Juyongguan

The bus location on Road 877 to the Badaling Great Wall is on the north side of Deshengmen Arrow Tower

Badaling and Juyongguan are the closest Great Walls to Beijing, and they are also the most crowded.

On weekdays, Badaling is not too crowded, and it is also the easiest one to reach among the Great Wall attractions where the transportation cost is not very expensive (that is, you don't need to take a taxi). Take bus No. 5 from the southwest side of Tiananmen Square (the fare is 1 yuan, if you have the Beijing Municipal Transportation Card, it is 0.4 yuan. You can reach the Bell Tower/Drum Tower in 10 minutes, and the front door in 30 minutes) and ride to the end Station, or take Metro Line 2 (the fare is determined according to the mileage, ranging from 3 yuan to 8 yuan, municipal card is not discounted) to Jishuitan Station. Walk north and east along the road to the bus station, and take bus 877 (air-conditioned long-distance bus, 12 yuan for a one-way ticket, 6 yuan for a card) to Badaling (or the 919 local train passing through Badaling). The last train from the city to Badaling leaves around 12:00 noon, and the last bus from Badaling to the city leaves at 16:00 in the afternoon. If you want to have a seat in an hour's drive, please arrive at the station half an hour in advance!

Please pay attention to:There are many "877 buses" in the departure station of Beijing City (that is, the station near Jishuitan), but the bus that actually goes to Badaling stops at the back of the station (the farthest east side). Please be wary of those who are wearing blue jackets pretending to be drivers. They will always be on the way to the real bus (or even in front of the real driver) saying "there are no more buses", "then It’s a fake bus," "That bus is too expensive," and so on, and try to get unsuspecting passengers to take their higher-priced taxis (or shuttles). The real bus driver of 877 here is helpless (because they may be eating), so you must consult the bus ticket seller directly. The price of the real 877 road is only 12 yuan (6 yuan for the municipal pass).

Please also note:From April 10th to June 6th, 2021, Jishuitan Station of Metro Line 2 will be closed for renovation. Passengers who take Line 877 should walk 1km westward from Exit A1 of Gulou Street Station to Deshengmen Jianlou North Side Station.

You can take the 877 road home for 12 yuan, which means you can stay in Badaling for as long as you want. In addition, you can also take a train at Beijing North Railway Station (near Xizhimen, accessible by Metro Line 13, 2 and 4) (the highest one-way fare for the second-class high-speed railway from this station to Badaling Great Wall Station is RMB 31. It is better than most flights, and there is plenty of room for the legs). But please be sure to call ahead or check the train schedule online, as train schedules often change.

In addition to taking the bus, you can also take the train from Huangtudian Station, which can be reached on foot from Exit G4 of Huoying Station of Metro Line 8/Line 13. (Tsinghua Park Station was demolished in 2016. During busy periods, you may not be able to buy seat tickets). seat61 [1] The schedule of trains posted on is more or less accurate, but please be sure to checkcnvol.comCome to compare and check. Traveling by train allows you to visit the Great Wall in your free time without having to go to the Ming Tombs and shopping stores. There are very large viewing windows on the train, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and the magnificent view of the Great Wall before arriving at Badaling. When you take the train leaving Beijing for Badaling, try to sit in the seat on the left side of the train to get the best view. The one-way fare of the train is 6 yuan, and the ticket must be purchased at the departure station on the day of departure. The time is not printed on the ticket, so you can use this train ticket at any time of the day. If you don't want to wait in line to buy tickets, you can use the Beijing Municipal One Card (Metro Card) to pay for the travel. If you can't find an empty seat, you can go to the dining car, which is almost empty, and there are several comfortable tables and chairs. Get off at Badaling Station and turn left and walk 800 meters to the entrance of Badaling. In addition, there are some high-speed trains passing through Badaling Great Wall Station at the newly-built Qinghe Railway Station. The fare between the two stations is 23 yuan, but there are fewer trains. Ticket prices for Badaling are 45 yuan (peak season) or 40 yuan (low season) (students can enjoy discounts with student ID). The price of audio guide services varies, and a deposit of 200 yuan is required. The price of a Chinese tour guide is 15 yuan, and English audio The tour guide is 40 yuan.

Because of the large number of steep mountains in the Badaling area, trekking on Badaling is still a big challenge, so if you go a little further on the Great Wall, you will find that the flow of people is rapidly decreasing. On weekdays, no vendors will chase you on the Great Wall to sell things—they stay in the small town. In addition, in the small town, you can also feed the Malay bear carrots (for three yuan each). Outside of the Forbidden City or Tiananmen Square, you must not spend 100 yuan on the "Beijing one-day tour" offered by those people-you only have two hours to visit the Great Wall, and then go to the Ming Tombs and have to eat lunch. In addition, they will cancel your bus and you will not leave until the bus is full. To go back to downtown Beijing, you have to stay with your tour group (they have big speakers).

In winter, the temperature difference between downtown Beijing and the Badaling Great Wall will reach more than 5 degrees. Coupled with the wind blowing from the mountains to the north, you will treat every piece of clothing on your body as a treasure. Vendors will sell everything you might have forgotten here, even though their asking prices are not fair. But the good thing is: there will be much less tourists, there will be almost no one after walking through the first hill, and there will be winter sunshine. If you are lucky, the snow on the Great Wall will bring you unparalleled beauty.

Mutianyu

It's a bit farther than Badaling, and the restoration is just as good, but it's obviously less crowded. The surrounding scenery should be a little greener. There is a ski ropeway for tourists to go up and down the Great Wall (of course, you can also go up the ladder), and there is also a sled slide to slide down. In terms of transportation, taxis are the most convenient. The only bus that goes directly to Mutianyu Scenic Area is No. 867, which only runs during the tourist peak season (March 15 to November 15). On May 3, 2012, Route 867 departed from the bus station outside Dongzhimen at 7:00 and 8:30 respectively. From Dongzhimen Bus Station (Exit H of Dongzhimen Subway Station, you can take Airport Line, Line 13, Line 2 to arrive), turn left and walk for about 10 minutes, until you see a full bus on your left Parking lot (do not cross the street). In order to clarify the bus route, when you go upstairs from the subway station, you will find that Route 867 is not written on the bus transfer plan of the subway station. The platform where Route 867 is located is a completely independent bus terminal outside the main building of the bus station. This is also the place where Route 867 leaves. It is not easy to find, and you may be harassed by taxi drivers and black buses (please take precautions). The one-way fare of Route 867 is RMB 16 (RMB 6.4 with the municipal all-in-one pass), and the journey is 2.5 hours.

(In August 2017, the Beijing Public Transport Company changed the 867 road to the H57 road, and the 867 tourist line above has been suspended. The 936 road below was changed to the H58 road. Take the Huairou District bus h23, h24, h35 , H36 to Mutianyu Huandao Station and get off)

In addition, you can choose route 936 or route 916, which will take you to a distance of 17 kilometers from the Great Wall and 60 kilometers from the city.HuairouArea. There you have to take a taxi (20 RMB, but you must negotiate with the driver or ask for a meter, otherwise your travel expenses may be as high as 50 RMB). Please note that some taxi drivers seem to be partnering with bus drivers in Dongzhimen, and they may try to get you off at the wrong stop to ensure that you can take a taxi (the travel cost is more than 400 at this time!). Also pay attention to those who help you at Dongzhimen. They may partner with a taxi driver and may point you to the wrong bus route (such as No. 980). In the end, you have to return to Huairou and pay double the price for the ride. taxi.

The real "Huairou North Street" bus station is not a waiting building, nor does it contain any elements related to the "Great Wall". It is just an ordinary street bus station. When you get off the bus, you need to cross the street, otherwise you will head in the opposite direction (you will see a large roundabout). The behavior and asking prices of those vendors are unbearable, so be prepared in advance.

The return journey takes two hours, and the fare is about RMB 30 per person, plus a parking fee of RMB 5 per person (the bus will stop when you go to visit). For the return journey, the 867 tourist line departs at No. 3 parking lot at 14:00 and 16:00 in the afternoon-if you take 867 to Mutianyu in the morning, then No. 3 parking lot is where you got off at that time. Please pay attentionSunday afternoon at 16:00The 867 bus from the bus may be really crowded. This is an official bus with a number, so please don't be confused by any other drivers (such as small buses) trying to grab passengers. Also, please don't be fooled by any taxi driver who says "there is no bus." Bus schedules are usually hidden behind small trucks on the west side of the parking lot or behind large cars parked in front of it to confuse passengers.

The scenery of Mutianyu is very magnificent. The ticket price is RMB 45. Students can bring their student ID with photo to enjoy a student ticket discount of RMB 25. In addition, the price of the cable car is higher than the ticket: 100 yuan for adults. You can also skip the cable car and spend 15 minutes walking up the mountain in the beautiful scenic spot. The forest park is completely free. If you are not afraid to go through some bushes, you can appropriately increase the grip of your shoes, go through the repaired part, and head to the highest watchtower. Your efforts will be greatly rewarded!

The last train from Huairou City to Dongzhimen is Route 936, which departs at 17:00 in the afternoon, while the last train of Route 916 departs at 19:00 in the evening. If there is no Beijing Municipal Transportation Card (you can buy and recharge it at any subway station or the square outside Beijing Railway Station, anonymously, the deposit is 20 yuan), then the price is 16 yuan, if you have the municipal all-purpose card, the price is less than 5 yuan. You canMunicipal Transportation CardQuery related information on the website (only Simplified Chinese is supported).

If you miss the bus, you can stay in Huairou. There is a tourist information center in Huairou. Although it seems to be closed due to lack of tourists, it is still open during normal working hours and they can help you find a place to stay. (However, it is recommended that you look for hotel reservation information on Chinese tourism websites. They often have updated information and more adequate options, and support multiple languages.) You can also go to the nearby Yanqi Lake scenic spot to visit nearby eco-tourism projects And looking for accommodation.

Huanghuacheng

The Yellow Flower City is one of the most well-built parts of the Great Wall, which led to the beheading of the builder, Lord Cai (English original: Lord Cai)-due to poor management and waste.

It is located in Jiuduhe Town, Huairou District, Beijing, 65 kilometers away from downtown Beijing and 35 kilometers northwest of the center of Huairou District. The lake naturally disconnects the three sections of the Great Wall, so it is called the Water Great Wall.

Gubeikou, Jinshanling and Simatai

Far away from Beijing, the corresponding tourists are also greatly reduced. However, the service provided here takes precedence, please make sure you bring enough water and power.

It is composed of the Great Wall of the Northern Qi Dynasty and the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty.

Gubeikou Great Wall has scenic spots such as the Anti-Japanese War ruins. The broken walls and bullet holes in this section of the Great Wall are quite distinctive. Ticket ¥25

Simatai is the only ancient Great Wall in my country that retains the original appearance of the Ming Dynasty.

Nock

(The Jiankou has not been refurbished, the terrain is steep, and there are many collapses. Ordinary tourists should do what they can, and professional travel friends should be fully prepared.)

One of the most famous sections of the Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty. Many published photos of the Great Wall were taken here. The name here is "Jiankou" because the shape of the mountain is like an arrow, while the opening of the collapsed ridge looks like an arrow.

The Jiankou Great Wall has many famous sights, such as the "Nine Eyes Tower", an important command post during the ancient war. The tower has three floors, with nine holes in each direction, like nine eyes. The "Beijing Knot" is the meeting point of three sections of the Great Wall from different directions. "Ladder" is a steep staircase with an elevation angle of 70-80 degrees. It leads to the "Eagle Flying Upside Down", a bell tower built on a high mountain. It is very dangerous here, even the eagle has to face the blue sky to fly to the top of the tower. "Zhengbei Building" is an ideal place to enjoy the beautiful scenery of sunrise and sunset.

Shuiguan

Located near the Badaling Great Wall. The Shuiguan Great Wall is sometimes called the "Badaling-Shuiguan Great Wall". Tourists who don't know the truth are often taken to the Shuiguan Great Wall instead of its destination, the Badaling Great Wall, especially during holidays or peak tourist seasons. No matter which Great Wall you want to go to, please make an inquiry or search online, especially to check the ticket fee.

After restoration, the Shuiguan Great Wall was opened to the public in 1995. In addition to climbing the Great Wall, you can also visit Genghis Khan Palace, Shifo Temple, Camel Peak, and the nearby Great Wall Stele Forest.

Activity

  • Hiking from Jinshanling to Simatai Most of the Great Wall east of Jinshanling is still well preserved. The trek from Jinshanling to the Simatai Great Wall is about 10 kilometers in length. This trek is of great significance, not only in distance, but also in the ups and downs of altitude, but you can enjoy the magnificent scenery and adequate exercise. You are expected to spend 2.5 hours to 6 hours on this section of the Great Wall, depending on your fitness status, photography needs and frequency. When you walk in the middle of this journey, you may find that there are no tourists around. In fact, foreign tourists are more likely to stick to the whole journey than domestic tourists. Comfortable shoes and clothing are necessary because the bricks under your feet may move and sometimes you have to climb mountains. You should put water and snacks in your backpack, but you will also see many vendors selling water and food on the walls. When you finish hiking and descend from Simatai, you can experience the zipline crossing the river for RMB 40. The zipline is about 400 meters long. The zipline will take you to the other side of the river, and a boat will take you to the bus. During this hike,There will be a toll station to charge you, Because you are entering another section of the Great Wall scenic spot. If you travel between these two scenic spots, there seems to be no other way than to pay the fee or turn back.Since June 2010, the Simatai Great Wall has been closed to the outside world due to repairs, so you can only go to the western end and turn back. (The Simatai Great Wall has been repaired and is now open)
  • Visit the Great Wall Museum Across the Badaling Pedestrian Street, on a hill behind the circular visual theater, there is the Great Wall Museum. These exhibits are a good description of the long history of the Great Wall spanning the dynasties, as well as various cultural relics and valuable observation tower models, zoom ladders and other items from different periods. The museum is free (closed on Monday from 9:00 am to 16:00 pm), and the ticket for the round theatre mentioned just now is 40 yuan per person.
  • Mutianyu sled slide The Mutianyu Great Wall provides two slides leading to different parts of the Great Wall. One looks very modern with a bubble ceiling, and the other looks less modern with double seats. If you feel good and the weather is sunny, the less modern trail is also suitable for a sled ride. If you want, you can easily buy a ticket for a sled car-the ticket office is at the start of the slide. Please note:The cost of the downhill cable car and the slide is the same, but they are not interchangeable. If you buy the wrong ticket, you can go back to the ticket office for a refund and go to another ticket office to buy the correct ticket.

Safety

Pay attention to the weather and climate When visiting the Great Wall in the cold season, please bring a windproof or cold-proof jacket. In the summer, you need a lot of water, but there are many vendors selling goods in places with a lot of people. In addition, pay attention to the sudden and short-term thunderstorms that may come.

Don't leave any traces in the scenic area Although this is not uncommon, we still resist the act of portraying names or other symbols on the Great Wall, or even directly bringing the bricks home. If the Great Wall is damaged because of your actions, the administrative authorities may fine you or other punishments.

HikingAs a recreational sport, it has not been widely accepted in China, so the etiquette for transnational or private territory has not yet been established. Remember, most places on the Great Wall are dirt or unstable rocks. If you visit outside the repaired area, you can only rely on yourself. Even if you are not walking on the Great Wall, you will find several paths. In some areas, the place where the Great Wall passes is a vertical cliff, which is weird and unsafe. In addition, it is difficult to obtain clean drinking water on the Great Wall, and there is even no water in some places. Other areas may have some man-made obstacles, such as strong fences on roads and highways. There are few villages where you can get supplies, and the journey is far away, some villages are even several kilometers away from the Great Wall.Rough drawingThis is another issue that needs attention. Due to the military use of maps, it is difficult for you to get a map with a scale of less than 1:450 000. In addition, there are very few tour guides familiar with the terroir along the Great Wall. If you plan to expedition to the Great Wall, the last thing you need to consider is that China does not have a rescue mechanism for people in mountain/wilder areas, so if something happens, you can only rely on yourself.

Fraud Beware of tourist bus fraud, this may ruin your good mood for the day. Try to avoid participating in the 100-150 yuan tour of the Great Wall. For example, these advertisements were distributed around the Forbidden City, and the real shuttle service to the Great Wall only cost less than 20 yuan! In addition, these drivers may stop and drive you off halfway.

transportation

Badaling Great Wall: Take bus 877 at Deshengmen Jianlou for one stop, the fare is 12 yuan, Deshengmen departs from 6:00-12:00, and Badaling Great Wall departs from 11:00-17:00.

For other scenic spots except the Badaling Great Wall, I hope you can travel with a tourist team that can bring you back from the scenic spot. The taxi from the scenic spot back to downtown Beijing is very expensive (even in Badaling, the taxi costs hundreds of dollars).
