learn

Algiers is a port city in the Mediterranean bay, originally built more than 1,000 years ago. This is a large city with a population of over 3 million.

Although the city centre of Algiers looks modern, the capital is struggling to keep up with the rapid economic growth. Many people have poor living standards. In the past decade, Algiers has also been damaged by violence. The civil war that began in 1991 destroyed most of the country. Things have returned to normal recently (at least in Algiers). A major renovation of the infrastructure has already begun and is still continuing.

Algiers is known locally as El-Djazaïr, and its residents speak Berber, Arabic and French.

Algiers is not considered a popular tourist destination, and the US State Department has warned against traveling to other parts of the country. In Algiers, most interesting sights are located in the old part of the city called Casbah or Medina. Travelers arriving in Algiers are deeply impressed by the very friendly and hospitable people. Many old French buildings, promenades along the waterfront and food have also received good reviews.
