THE Abkhazia (Abkhaz: Аҧсны; Russian: Абха́зия; Georgian: აფხაზეთი) is a self-declared republic separated from the Georgia (although this is not officially recognized). As Georgia has no control over Abkhazia, the region is, from a tourist's point of view, an independent country. Abkhazia borders the regions russians in Krasnodar Krai and Karachay-Cherkessia to the north, the Svaneti to this one, and Samegrelo to the south. It is located in northwestern Georgia, on the coast of the Black Sea. Currently, Abkhazia is under separatist control due to the Georgian-Abekhaz conflict, which began in 1992-93 and remains unresolved today.

Understand

Abkhazia owes its name to the Abkhasians, an ancient people of the northwestern Caucasus unrelated to the Georgians or Russians. Not long after Georgia's independence, ethnic conflict erupted in this region, resulting in the expulsion of Georgians and the establishment of a weak, independent Abkhaz government. in fact of the Georgian government, with support from the Russia. Abkhazia is a beautiful region along the Black Sea, full of beaches, history, huge mountains, lakes and caves.

Climate

Abkhazia has a temperate subtropical climate, and average annual temperatures reach 15°C, with lows of 4°C in winter (in January) and highs of 23°C in summer (in July).

To arrive

Abkhazia's borders were closed during the 1990s and early 2000s to non-Russian citizens. Since self-proclaimed independence in 2008, borders are likely to have closed once again. There are two border crossings - one with Russia, on the Psou river; and another with the Georgia, on the Inguri River. However, the Georgian border is extremely dangerous and virtually closed.

Speak

Abkhaz, a language of the northwestern Caucasus, is the main language spoken in the region. Russian is understood by almost everyone in the region, and is the most convenient language for the traveller. Although many people know a lot about Georgian, they can become hostile towards the traveler who uses this language, due to the brutal and yet unresolved conflict between Georgians and Abkhasians.
