Akhaltsikhe - city in Georgia in the province Samckhe-Javakheti, a spa town in the complex of thermal springs. It is located in the southwestern part of the country in the Lesser Caucasus on the Pocchowi-Tskali River.
Characteristic
The city has existed for at least 800 years and was the regional administrative center for the Ottomans from the 16th century until the Russo-Turkish war. Until the 20th century, Akhaltsikhe was mostly Armenian, but today, unlike most provinces, it is mostly Georgian. It's a rather sleepy city, but the Old Town is well worth a visit. It is a great base for exploring the surrounding villages, including the Sapara Monastery and the Khertvisi Fortress in the immediate vicinity

Akhaltsikhe is located about 130 km from the Kutaisi Airport, which offers cheap flights from Katowice and Warsaw via the Wizz Air.

Most of the center can be explored on foot. The road between Borjomi and Vardzia is about 2 km east of the center and 2.5-3 km east of the castle.
Worth seeing
On a hill located in the old part of the city - Rabati - there is a castle-fortress from the 12th century. It has recently been reconstructed. The area of the fortress covers about 7 hectares. There are, among others: a complex system of defensive fortifications, houses with traditional regional architecture, old baths, a church, a regional Historical Museum, a mosque from 1752 and the ruins of a madrassa.
The city has the Museum of Georgian Art and the statue of Queen Tamara.
