Agios Georgios is a seaside resort on Corfu.

background

Agios Georgios is very suitable for a relaxing beach holiday by the sea. There is a good mix between relaxation, activity by the sea and optionally rest or entertainment in the evening.

Agios Georgios South should not be confused with the city of the same name in the north of the island. When speaking to the local population of Agios Georgios South, everyone knows what is meant. The English version of Saint George South is also understood and can even be found on some signs, but this is not the official name of the place.

getting there

By plane

The only airport on the island of Corfu is in Corfu Town. The best way to get to Agios Georgios from here is by car - there are many rental cars at the airport. Alternatively, you can take a taxi. Costs of around € 50-70 must be expected here. The journey by car from Corfu Town takes about 45 minutes.

By bus

There are daily bus connections between Corfu Town and its airport and Agios Georgios.

In the street

From Corfu town take the coastal road on the eastern edge of the island to the south in the direction of Lefkimmi. Just before Lefkimmi and shortly after Chlomos on the left you will find Agios Georgios on the right. Turn right after the town sign and follow the road for about two kilometers.

From Lefkimmi follow the coastal road north to Corfu town. Agios Georgios is just after Lefkimmi on the left.

By boat

There are ferry connections from Italy to Corfu Town and Lefkimmi, for example. More information can be found in the article on the island of Corfu.

mobility

Agios Georgios is not very big. You can reach all touristically important places within 15-20 minutes on foot.

Tourist Attractions

The overview map linked here shows the most important tourist areas with some additional information. Shops, bars and restaurants can be found in the purple area. Pools accessible to the public are marked in light blue, water sports in dark blue. Recommended bars or restaurants are marked with a red marker.

Streets and squares

Directly on the coast to the Mediterranean Sea there is a three-kilometer long promenade where shops, bars and restaurants have settled. It is the only street in town that has a sidewalk and is continuously lit. The western half of the promenade is particularly interesting for tourists - this is where most of the restaurants and shops are located.

various

activities

Boat trip to Paxos and Antipaxos

Not far from Agios Georgios are the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, a few kilometers south of Corfu, in the Ionian Sea. Kostas Boat Trips offers boat trips to the two really beautiful islands with their cozy old towns. Departure is in the morning, and the return to Agios Georgios is expected in the late afternoon. The boat offers space for around 30 to 40 people and has both an indoor area and an open deck - depending on whether you want to experience shade or the refreshing wind, you can take a seat inside or outside. As a special highlight, the boat goes a little way into a cave directly on the water, which is a very nice sight. If the weather permits, the boat anchors a few hundred meters from Paxos and if you want, you can jump about three meters into the water from the upper deck. The boat has a ladder so that it is easy to get back on board.

Then the boat first drives to Paxos. Now you have a few hours to stop and look at the small island in peace. At the agreed time, you will then continue towards Antipaxos. Here, too, there are a few hours before the return journey begins.

The return journey from Antipaxos takes a long time with more than two hours. If you want to enjoy the ride on the upper deck, you should definitely think of a scarf - it will be extremely windy.

Kostas Boat Trips has a stand right on the promenade near the shore. The exact location is on this card marked. It's best to just go there and talk to the ticket vendors. They speak fluent English and some also speak a little German. There you can find out the prices as well as departure times and location.

water sports

There are various water sports activities on the beach. Directly in front of the large "Sandy Beach Resort" holiday complex is a wooden stand that sells tickets for various adventure trips on the sea. The individual journeys are quite expensive, but under the name "Do it all" there is a combined offer that includes four different journeys for currently (as of 2019) € 60.

Another provider further north rents jet skis. The exact locations can be found on this card. There is also a diving school on the coast.

For all activities except diving you have to wear life jackets, which you get from the provider.

Parasailing

When parasailing, you are secured on a parachute and then pulled by a motorboat. The parachute inflates and rises so that you are pulled about 10 meters above the sea. The view up there is very nice - you can look over the dunes to Lake Korission. You start on a platform in the water so that you stay dry here. Landing is gentle in the sea near the platform. The motorboat takes you to the platform and back to the island.

The ride is not fast, but very nice. Two people can be fixed together on the parachute.

Banana boat

The banana boat is an elongated boat in the shape of a banana, on which several people can sit one behind the other. The journey is quite fast and it can happen that you fall off the boat.

sofa

A large inflatable sofa that is pulled behind a motor boat for about 4 people. Quite a fast ride. It can happen that you fall off the boat.

Flying banana

This inflatable boat positions itself in the wind and may also take off. You have to hold on tight here, otherwise you will fall off the boat. Less strong people should rather opt for another variant.

Ringos

Several small inflatable rings for one person each, which are pulled behind a motorboat. You have to hold on very well, which can be exhausting. It can happen that a ring overturns and you fall into the sea. It's not dangerous, but it can be uncomfortable. It is important that you let go of the ring immediately in this case.

shop

There are small shops throughout the village that carry everything for daily needs. The choice is wide enough and you can find the most important things, even if you want to cook yourself. Most of the shops can be found on the promenade. The prices are sometimes a little higher than in German-speaking countries. But that's not because the small shops are overpriced. Rather, they are items that almost all have to be brought to the island by plane or ship - this drives up the price. There are two branches of the discount chain Lidl on the island - in Corfu Town and in Lefkimmi. If you need a bigger purchase, you can go there. In terms of price, it doesn't really make a difference.

The Lidl branch in Lefkimmi is much closer than the branch in Corfu Town. She is up this card marked.

kitchen

If you want to cook yourself, the most important things can be found in the supermarkets. However, the range of ingredients is not very extensive as it is geared towards tourists, most of whom do not want to cook for themselves. A more extensive range can be found in the Lidl branch in Lefkimi, which is, however, 20 minutes away by car.

Cheap

Tzevenos

Tzevenos is a hotel with an adjoining restaurant or bar including a pool. Although you can spend a few hours on a lounger by the pool with cheap drinks, the food is in the lower segment in terms of price and quality. If you want to eat something cheap quickly and do not attach great importance to taste, you will be satisfied here. The high quality Greek cuisine is not found here, however.

Location: On the main road between the entrance to the village and the beach on the right-hand side.

medium

Stamatis

Located directly on the promenade, the Stamatis restaurant offers high quality food at fair prices. You should definitely try tzatziki with pita bread, which is available as a starter for € 2. The staff is very friendly and attentive. You can sit by the water and have a very nice view of the Mediterranean from the terrace. Those who like it more active can pass the time at the pool table or at the slot machines. Sports fans take their places on the sofas in front of the large-screen TVs, on which sports programs from the PayTV provider Sky can be seen.

If you want it sunnier, you can use the direct beach access from the restaurant and relax on one of the loungers with parasols that are available for Stamatis customers.

Regarding the Stamatis restaurant, the information under "Nightlife" should also be observed.

Location: On the promenade directly opposite the supermarket of the same name.

Mad Mike's Bar

This bar is a must to visit. Initially operated as a pure bar, it has also been offering very good food at average prices for several years. If you like zaziki a little less garlic-heavy, you should order a portion. If you want to eat meat, you should try either "Drunk Chicken" or "Drunk Pork". The meat is served in a saucepan with a red wine sauce with paprika and pepperoni - it resembles a goulash soup. Rice is served with it. Very tasty and only found there.

There are also many very tasty dishes for vegetarians, which are freshly prepared by the family business.

In the mornings, a very tasty full English breakfast is served, which leaves nothing to be desired.

The landlord Elias is probably the most lovable restaurant operator in Agios Georgios. You can tell that he loves his work and he manages to put a smile on the face of all visitors with his friendly manner.

Evening entertainment is also provided here - more on this in the "Nightlife" section.

Location: On the main road between the entrance to the village and the beach on the left.

Upscale

Sea gulls

The Sea Gulls restaurant is probably the most beautiful place for a fine dinner. It is noticeably recognizable by the arched wooden bridge that leads the guest from the entrance over a fish-filled pond into the large garden behind the house. A path paved with natural stone leads back to the terrace where the tables are. The waiters greet the guests and assign tables. Free bread is served with a garlic spread.

The food is of very high quality and the views of the sea and the beach are incomparable. The whole area is very spacious and the individual tables are a few steps away from each other. As a result, the restaurant never feels full, even when it is well attended.

In terms of price, it is a bit higher than the competition - due to the high quality of the food, the beauty of the facility, the great attention and friendliness of the wait staff and, last but not least, the great view, it seems to be manageable here, for a dish two or three euros to pay more. The difference is actually not that big.

Location: On the promenade, a little further south, near the intersection of the main road that leads to the coastal road.

Stamatis restaurant

The restaurant hosts an Elvis Night every Thursday and Saturday. An Elvis actor sings.

Mad Mike's Bar

Every Tuesday and every second Thursday a band plays here on the small stage in the middle of the restaurant. Depending on the rush, the dance floor is full or it stays a little more comfortable. However, since the band's playlist is the same every time, one or two visits are enough. A special highlight is the dance and singing performance of the landlord, who as an amateur actor in the local theater certainly has acting skills.

On Fridays the bar hosts a "Greek Night", in other words a Greek night. A band plays traditional Greek music and a dancer performs Greek dances. The audience learns a few steps and is encouraged to participate. Very entertaining! Chicken is served with french fries or a baked potato. The chicken is much juicier than you might know from German-speaking countries - you should try it. However, it is important to reserve a table in advance, as the portions are precisely counted.
