background

The municipality consists of the localities of Airolo, Brugnasco, Fontana, Madrano, Nante and Valle. The formerly inhabited village of Albinasca and the hamlet of Bedrina are now abandoned.

The history of the place is shaped by the Gotthard Pass. This also gave him a certain wealth. Roman graves from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD were found. It is also the location of a military arsenal and barracks, which is responsible for the Gotthard fortresses.

The village was hit by natural disasters several times, for example on December 28, 1898, a landslide fell and killed three people in the village. As a result, a large protective wall was built above the village. Nevertheless, in the winter of 1951, a large avalanche reached the village on February 12, 1951, claiming ten deaths. For this reason, the avalanche barriers have been greatly expanded, which does not always look nice in summer, but is necessary to protect the village and the traffic routes.
