Akhfenir - Akhfenir

Akhfenir (also Akhfennir, Sidi Akhfenir and Sidi Akhfennir) is a small town in Tarfaya Province, Morocco. It is located between Tan-Tan and Tarfaya.

Understand

Akhfenir's touristy past is over since the Rally Paris-Dakar moved to South America. But it can be a convenient stop for the night and is used as such by a lot of truckers. It even has 2 hidden gems for nature lovers (see below).

Get in

Either by any of the buses that serve the Agadir-Dakhla route or by private car.

Get around

The village is small enough for exploration on foot.

See

  • The regularly beautiful sunsets at the beach, just behind the hotels at the main road.

Do

  • Visit the Khnifiss National Park with its beautiful lagoon 10 km (6.2 mi) south - follow the main road N1 due south until structures emerge in the west, turn westwards, towards the structures.
  • Visit the oasis a few kilometers in the east and its wild donkeys. Follow the asphalt road from the village center eastwards, up the hill, past a giant wind energy park to your right. After a few kilometers an old tire marks the spot where to leave the road to the left and park the car. The oasis is about 100 m north of the road. As this can be hard to find, asking a local in Akhfenir might be your best bet.

Eat

Several restaurants are lined up on the main road - fish is a good bet since it is caught locally.

Drink

Tea. Alcohol is not readily available.

Sleep

Several hotels at the main road offer accommodation. Clean rooms with WiFi, satellite TV and hot shower can be had for 150 dirhams.

Go next

North to Tan-Tan or south to Laayoune
