Alexandria Troas is an ancient ruined city in the province Çanakkale in the Turkey.

background

This city once rivaled Byzantium for the title of Constantinople. Today only ruins are a reminder of that time. The city was founded in 310 BC. under the name Antigoneia by Antigonos Monophthalmos, but probably built on a much older settlement. Nine years later the city was renamed by Lysimachus in Alexandria Troas. With numerous relocations from smaller places in the area, the city quickly grew in size. During this time the city could Troy run down the rank. The strategically well-located port, access to some trade routes and the wealth of resources in the area were a guarantee for prosperity and good sources of income. During this time, the 8 km long city wall was built, which encompasses an area of 400 hectares. When in the year 12 BC. A Roman veterans' colony was established here under Emperor Augustus, making the city the most important hub in the east of the empire. Every movement of the army from east to west (or vice versa) passed through this city. The influence of the city became so great that first Caesar and later Constantine considered making the city the new capital of the Roman Empire. The early Christians also quickly recognized the central role of the city. So Paul visited the city twice and was inspired to spread the Christian faith in Europe too. But in the following centuries Constantinople increasingly rose to become the leading metropolis in the Eastern Roman Empire, so that the influence of Alexandria Troas waned. In addition, the Goths invaded in the third century and caused fear and horror here too. Two major earthquakes in the fifth and sixth centuries AD. finally sealed the end of the city.
