Alvito Castle and Pillory

Alvito is a village about thirty kilometers from beja. It could be said that it was quite important, as it was a real landing for a long time.

Understand

In the village of Alvito (it was already mentioned in a document dated 1279), lost between Viana do Alentejo and Beja, we find Castelo de Alvito., the residence of Barões. Permission for its construction was given by D. Afonso V, in 1481, by letter, to D. João Fernandes da Silveira, 1st Baron of Alvito, which made this town remarkable. In 1777, after the earthquake of 1755, many were the buildings that were subject to restoration and refurbishment work, as due to the earthquake, it is known that the Castle of Alvito had some damaged walls. These remodeling works were ordered by D. Maria Bárbara de Menezes. During the 19th century, new restoration interventions took place, namely stucco and painting, after this castle was raided in 1834 by the lower classes of the liberal population. Also during this century (1887), a promise of purchase and sale was drawn up between El-Rei D. Carlos I and D. José Lobo da Silveira, allowing D. Carlos to D. José Lobo da Silveira Quaresma and D. Carolina Augusta Duarte, at the time owners of the castle, its usufruct until death (respectively in 1917 and 1936). However, in 1897, the castle had been definitively sold to D. Carlos. In 1915, D. Manuel II integrates the castle into the Fundação da Casa de Bragança. In 1975, the castle was occupied by the Alvito Residents Committee. They intended to install a school there. However, this idea ended up not gaining much acceptance, coming to be housed in the ground floor compartments, a consumer cooperative.

The castle's first church was built in the first half of the 16th century, shortly before the Baron, in 1548, obtained a license from the Archbishopric of Évora to celebrate mass. The confraternity of Espirito Santo da Matriz was transferred to this church, being obliged to have a wooden or stone altar. Access to the garden, tower and chapel reserved for guests only.
