Aného (former Petit-Popo is Anecho) is a coastal city of the Maritime Region in Togo.

To know

Aného is an old colonial city that owes its charm to the numerous buildings characteristic of the architecture of the time.

Historically it was known as Little Popo and its development was linked to the slave trade organized by the Portuguese.

The major livelihoods for the city are agriculture and fishing with related industries, while it is still a center for Voodoo.

Geographical notes

The city is located west of the mouth of the Mono River and the border with the Benin and southeast of Togo lake, on a strip of land between the lagoon and the sea about 2 km wide.

Background

The old town, built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, was founded by Guin immigrants. The native peoples of Aného are Guin and Mina.

At the beginning of the colonial rule German in 1884 Anecho it was briefly occupied by French.

It was the capital of Togoland for a short period between 1884 and 1897; after the transfer of the capital a Lome, Aného gradually lost importance; a decline exacerbated by coastal erosion. During the French occupation (between 1914 and 1919) it was once again the capital.

The city hosted the "World Congress of Esperanto Youth" from 5 to 12 August 2017; at the conference, King Lawson VIII expressed interest in Esperanto.

German cemetery

There are Protestant churches of the late nineteenth century, but voodoo cultures also persist. These buildings were added to the provisional list of theUNESCO on December 12, 2000, in the cultural category.

  • Church of Peter and Paul. Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aného, ​​dating from 1898.
