background

The Other Bus

In 1872 the city was founded as a settlement for workers in a steelworks. The iron and steel industry and Fort McCellan are the city's major employers. In 1961, when the civil rights movement was gaining strength, there was a major incident involving a bus Freedom Riders. The Freedom Riders campaigned for the abolition of racial segregation in public transport. At that time there were separate areas for blacks and whites on the buses and trains. A bus of the movement was stopped near the city, the doors were blocked and the bus with occupants was set on fire. As the fire got bigger and bigger, the attackers let go of the bus and the occupants got outside. The mob then tried to lynch the bus occupants, but this was thwarted by gunshots by a highway police officer passing by.
