Anse-Bertrand (creole: Lansbétran) is a community in Guadeloupe.

background

This fishing village is the northernmost parish on the island, 37 km from Pointe-a-Pitre. The foundation goes back to the governor Houel and the year 1660. In 1790 there were 12 cotton and 21 sugar cane plantations in the area. In 1818 there were still 24 windmills and 20 sugar cane plantations. In the 20th century, the Beauport sugar factory acquired large tracts of land to grow sugar cane. Shortly before the turn of the millennium, operations were stopped after hurricane “Hugo” destroyed almost all of the trees on the plateau in 1989.

Another industrial company in the region had to give up. The 32 hectare Campeche poultry farm, 7 km east, was closed in 2006 due to salmonella. An auction sale failed in 2008. As a result, the two communities Anse-Bertrand and Port-Louis took over the property at the lowest price to prevent land speculators.

The fishing port is on the northern outskirts of Anse à Sable.

beaches

  • Anse à Sable. Fishing port, the water depth there is 2 m.
  • Anse de la Chapelle. Reef-protected, fine, white beach, trees and palm trees protect against the sun, no infrastructure. But a lot of locals come at the weekend. From there you have a direct view of the island of Montserrat, you can see the smoking volcano there.
  • Anse Pistolet. This is a little-visited bay on the northern tip. The water has a lot of waves in bad weather and it is dangerous there.
  • L'Anse Laborde, north of the place. Small, shady, pink beach. The sea has a light but harmless undercurrent.
  • La Porte d'Enfer. Beach in a sheltered bay. The sea is deep here with a few rocks, but not dangerous. Many campers come here on public holidays.

getting there

In the street

From Pointe-a-Pitre on the northern arterial roads through the cities of Abymes and Morne-A-L´Eau to the junction of Balin (20 km from Pointe-a-Pitre). There you can choose the coastal road via Petit-Canal and Port-Louis, or you turn right, drive almost 900 m and then after a left turn for 7 km you have an almost straight road in front of you. It leads close to the center of the island and with a few curves it leads to Anse-Bertrand at the end.
