Anse-La-Raye is a city in Saint Lucia.

background

Today's fishing village Ansa la Raye was one of the first bays visited by the French conquerors. In 1775 there were 107 plantations there. During the French Revolution, the place was renamed Egalite. Fighting over the region broke out between the French and the English. When the English came to power, they declared the slaves free. They then plundered the plantations of their former masters, murdered them and set everything on fire. The place itself burned and only the foundation walls of the church remained. In 1982 this village was selected as the location for a center for applied technologies, and in 1983 it won first place in the national competition for the most beautiful village. Today there are two small factories there, but the majority of the 6,495 residents in the community still live from fishing. The restored Sikwi sugar mill is located at the southern exit of the village. The owners run a restaurant in the same location.

The fishing complex was renovated with the help of Japan and reopened in March 2010. The water front is now also to be renewed.

Tourist Attractions

  • Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is a bit out of the way and 300 m from the beach. A chapel is said to have existed in the same place as early as 1762. This was destroyed by a hurricane in 1780, rebuilt and burned down during the French Revolution. The foundation stone for today's church was laid in 1907. If you stand in front of the church, there is a tower tower to the left of the portal. But it is not higher than the pointed gable of the church. The altar came straight from France. Around the church you can find the cemetery.
  • La Sikwi sugar mill. Guided tours from Monday to Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The sugar mill was built in 1860. After the end of sugar cane cultivation, lemons and coconut palms were planted, and in the early 1960s bananas were also planted. The mill was rented to the government because the water wheel was used to generate electricity for Anse-La-Raye. In 1990 the mill was renovated and converted into a restaurant. The property is 750 m from the town center (church) on the main road towards Soufriere.
